RIIWHS202D Enter and work in confined spaces
Course Overview
The aim of this course is to provide confined space education to all persons working within industries that utilise confined spaces (enclosed or partially enclosed) for the purpose of carrying out work or inspections and also is appropriate for those performing sentry or standby-by person roles. Industries include Civil, Construction, Coal Mining, Metalliferous Mining, Exploration, Drilling and Marine.
It is designed to provide the basic skills and knowledge that underpins safe work in confined spaces, to ensure the health and safety of all persons who have to enter, work in or on confined spaces, in compliance with the current legislative requirements of Work Health and Safety Act, the current Work Health and Safety Regulations and the current AS/NZS 2865.
Course includes units of competence for MSAPMPER200C Work in accordance with an issued permit and MSAPMPER205C Enter confined spaces.
Eligibility and Target Audience
There are no specific requirements for entry into this course, however during course delivery, the unit MSAPMPER200C Work in accordance with an issued permit must be assessed prior to the assessment of MSAPMPER205C Enter confined space.
All persons with work activities related to a confined space should attend, including those who:
- Perform work in or around confined spaces
- Have responsibility for the direct control of work in confined spaces
- Are involved in emergency response and first aid procedures
AS/NZS 2865 requires reassessment ‘at appropriate intervals’. The industry regards reassessment on a two to three year cycle as good practice.
Outcomes
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Outline appropriate legislative requirements and responsibilities
- Identify scope of permits to work and complete permits to work
- Use safety equipment and personal protective equipment
- Work in accordance with, and complete permitted work in a confined space
- Apply basic risk management concepts
- Enter and control confined space work
- Observe permitted work
- Conclude confined space operations
- Emergency response and equipment requirements
Your competencies will be assessed through completion of theory and practical exercises. Upon successful completion of the course you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment and a course Competency Card.
